Freshmen David Lembke and Kirill Orlov picked up wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches, but it wasn’t enough for Averett to topple No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University in the USA South Conference Tournament semifinals at the Burlington Tennis Center. The Captains (14-8) swept all three doubles matches and took four of the six singles contests to earn a 7-2 victory over the third-seeded Cougars (8-7).

The third-seeded Averett University men’s tennis team breezed through No. 6 seed Ferrum College for a 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday at the Burlington Tennis Center. The Cougars (8-6) swept the top four singles matches and took two out of three doubles contests.

Averett junior Xavier Ruiz and freshman David Lembke were both selected to the USA South All-Conference Teams on Wednesday. Ruiz was voted to the First Team, while Lembke was a Second Team selection.

Averett University defeated Roanoke College 6-3 in non-conference men's tennis action on Monday. The win was their third in three days and fourth in their last five matches.
