Averett alumna Brenda LaFlamme West was named as the Cougars' new softball head coach. She is the school's fifth softball coach and the program's first full-time softball coach since its inception in 1983.

Averett University softball head coach Stefanie Anderson has stepped down after three seasons. She led the program to a 33-65 record, including a 20-17 mark during the 2009 season. This season, Averett finished 5-25 and had five players receive recognition from the USA South Conference.

Shenandoah University freshman Amanda Litwin took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Friday afternoon to help the sixth-seeded Hornets to a 7-2 win over eighth-seeded Averett in the USA South Conference Tournament at Springwood Park.

Averett freshman Nicole DeFilippo pitched six solid innings and only allowed five hits and one earned run, but the ninth-seed Cougars’ offense only recorded two hits and stranded five base runners in a 3-0 loss to No. 8 seed N.C. Wesleyan in the first round of the 2010 USA Conference Tournamen on Friday morning at Springwood Park.
