Guilford holds off Averett men

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett pulled to within one point of Guilford College with just over five minutes to play, but the Quakers held on for a 73-63 victory on Tuesday at the Grant Center.

Guilford (4-1) held an eight-point lead with 7:35 to play, but the Cougars charged back. Senior Max Stone's layup cut the deficit to only six and senior Justin Parker hit a 3-pointer to trim the Guilford lead to 56-53. Less than a minute later, freshman Kenny Hart hit a layup to get the Cougars to within one.

Guilford's Clay Henson answered with back-to-back 3-pointers. He finished with a game-high 33 points, including seven 3-pointers.

Averett (3-2) pulled to within four, but the Cougars couldn't connect on several opportunities before time ran out.

The Cougars opened the game with a 5-0 run, leading Guilford to call a 30-second time out. Averett extended the lead to 10 less than seven minutes in only to see the Quakers go on an 11-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. Guilford entered the break ahead 39-35.

Senior Damien Brown led Averett with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Hart finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds and senior Ryan Frazier scored 10. Senior Jonathan Rumley added nine points and 15 boards.

Rhett Bonner added 18 points for Guilford, and George Neville scored 10 points.

Averett returns to action on Dec. 3 at home against Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
