DANVILLE, Va. — Averett suffered its first loss of the season as Bridgewater College defeated the Cougars 52-39 on Tuesday at the Grant Center.
Bridgewater (1-2) never trailed in the contest, and the Eagles took a 26-21 into halftime. Jordan Burkholder had 13 of Bridgewater's points at the break.
Despite outrebounding Bridgewater 42-28, the Cougars (3-1) shot just 26.9 percent from the field and committed 36 turnovers.
Averett pulled within nine points with 7:21 to play, but the Cougars couldn't get any closer. The loss ended Averett's best start in the program's history.
Sophomore
Ashley Washington, who had a double-double by halftime, finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also had seven steals.
Burkholder finished with 13 points after picking up four quick fouls in the opening minutes of the second half, including a technical. Jennifer Saunders added 11 points for the Eagles.
Averett returns to action on Saturday at home against Roanoke College at 2 p.m.
