MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Averett lost to Monmouth College 3-1 but battled back to beat host Rhodes College 3-2 to finish play at the Rhodes Classic on Sunday. Monmouth beat Averett by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 25-13 and topped Rhodes by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-13, 15-12.
Against Rhodes, the Cougars were down 2-1 before taking the fourth set 25-13. In the deciding fifth set, Averett came out on top 15-12.
Averett (18-11) fell to Monmouth to start the day. After three close sets, Monmouth put the match away with a 24-13 win in the fourth set.
