FERRUM, Va. — Averett dropped its first two sets, but the Cougars won the next three to beat Ferrum College 3-2 on Wednesday night by scores of 17-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-12.

Facing the possibility of a three-set sweep by Ferrum, Averett (19-11, 11-2 USA South) rebounded from a 6-1 hole in the third set. The Cougars took eight of the next 10 points to go in front. Averett began to pull away midway through to force another set.

That set also began in the Panthers' favor. Ferrum raced out to a 13-5 advantage before the Cougars mounted yet another comeback. Averett junior Shannon Andy's service ace tied the set at 17-17. The two teams were neck and neck over the next 10 points. With the score tied 23-23, senior Brooke Leighton notched a pair of service aces to clinch the fourth set.

In the deciding fifth set, Averett got off on the right foot and took a 6-2 lead, which led to a Ferrum timeout. The Cougars kept a three-point cushion until Ferrum (12-16, 5-8 USA South) cut their lead to 14-12, but Andy got the kill to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Andy and senior Jordan Maupin led the Cougars with 14 kills. Maupin also had nine digs. Freshman Savanna Butts had 10 kills and six blocks. Sophomore Jesse Jones had 43 assists and senior Marie Keatts finished with 16 digs.
