DANVILLE, Va. — Averett sent its three seniors out with a 2-1 victory over Hollins University on Friday in the Cougars' final home game of the season.
Sophomore
Mary-Kate Cogan broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with a goal from 20 yards out. Senior
Hillary Wood dropped off the pass to Cogan, who rocketed the ball over the head of Hollins goalkeeper Kristen Norkus and into the net. It was Cogan's first goal of the season.
Averett's defense thwarted several Hollins attacks late in the second half to preserve the victory in the final home game for Wood and fellow seniors
Meghan Cole and
Kirsten Marvin.
Hollins (4-10-1) jumped in front 1-0 less than seven minutes into the game. Colleen Thamm scored off a pass from Brooke Bruce to put the Cougars in an early hole. The Cougars (7-9-0) responded in the 26th minute with an equalizer. Cole's long pass found Wood in front of the goal, and Wood got the ball past a charging Norkus and over to freshman
Silje Storstrand, who tied the score at 1-1 with her second goal of the season.
Sophomore
Samantha Lupo had nine saves in goal for the Cougars, including one midway through the second half on a one-on-one. Thamm got behind two Averett defenders and fired a shot on goal, but Lupo was there to make the diving save.
Averett concludes its regular season at Ferrum College on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m.
