SALEM, Va. — Averett edged Roanoke College 3-2 in non-conference action on Thursday night. The Cougars held off Roanoke 25-13, 17-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13.
After Roanoke (13-16) forced a deciding fifth set, Averett jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final frame. Although the Maroons tied the score at 6-6, Averett eventually pulled out to a 13-9 advantage. Roanoke closed the gap to 14-13, but freshman
Hannah Wetherald delivered the kill to put the Maroons away.

Jordan Maupin led the Cougars wirh 12 kills, 16 digs and five service aces, while junior
Shannon Andy and senior
Brandy Apple finished with 10 kills and eight kills, respectively. Sophomore
Jesse Jones added 43 assists and 15 digs and senior
Marie Keatts had 31 digs.
The Cougars (21-13) dominated the first set and led early in the second. Roanoke, however, took the lead during a stretch in which the Maroons won 15 of 19 points played.
Averett trailed 22-18 in the third set before the Cougars rallied. With Jones serving, Averett took a 23-22 lead before taking that game. The Cougars dropped the fourth set after they fell behind 6-0 and couldn't catch up.
Averett returns to action on Saturday in a conference tri-match against Christopher Newport University and N.C. Wesleyan College.
