DANVILLE, Va. — Seventh-ranked Christopher Newport University did all of its damage in the second half in a 3-0 victory over Averett on Senior Day at the Cougar Den on Friday afternoon.

The Captains (15-2, 5-0 USA South) broke a scoreless tie less than five minutes into the second half when Nao Masuda scored from about 15 yards out. Masuda helped give Christopher Newport a cushion minutes later when he found John Corser for a goal.

Joseph O'Connell added a goal off a free kick by Cliff Kipper in the 79th minute.

Averett (9-7-1, 3-3 USA South) missed numerous opportunities to score, especially in the first half. Freshman Timi Heikkonen and sophomore Samuli Markkanen, who combined for 12 of the Cougars' 15 shots, pushed several shots just wide of the goal.

Averett freshman goalkeeper Nate Barker also kept the Captains at bay with several diving saves in the first half. He finished with nine saves.

Before the game, the Cougars honored lone senior Patrick Hughes, who played his final regular season game at home on Friday.

Although their regular season has been completed, the Cougars will host a first round USA South Conference Tournament game on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
