ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Averett upended N.C. Wesleyan College 3-2 on Saturday to earn a split in Saturday's tri-match to end regular-season play. The Cougars (21-14, 13-5) fell to Christopher Newport University 3-0 earlier in the day.
Against N.C. Wesleyan (20-12, 14-4 USA South), the Cougars bounced back from a 25-17 loss in the opening set to win 25-19 in the second set. N.C. Wesleyan won the next set 25-20, but Averett responded with a 25-20 win to force a fifth set.
In the final set, N.C. Wesleyan held a 5-3 lead early, but the Cougars rebounded with seven straight points to go in front. Although the Bishops got within two points twice, junior
Shannon Andy got the kill to clinch the match.
Andy finished with a game-high 15 kills. Freshman
Brooke Hensley added 12 kills and 16 digs. The Cougars also got 27 digs from senior
Marie Keatts, 17 digs from senior
Jordan Maupin and 11 digs from senior
Brooke Leighton. Sophomore
Jesse Jones added 49 assists and 14 digs.
Chistopher Newport (30-6, 18-0 USA South) defeated Averett 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, in the first match of the day. Freshman
Hannah Wetherald had a team-high nine kills, while Keatts had 12 digs and Jones had 27 assists.
Averett earned the third seed in next week's USA South Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The Cougars will host sixth-seeded Peace College at the Grant Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
