DANVILLE, Va. — Despite a strong push in the second half, Averett couldn't come from behind in a 5-1 loss to Meredith College on Friday afternoon at the Cougar Den.
After being limited to just one shot in the first half, Averett (4-7, 1-4 USA South) rattled off eight shots in the second half, including one by freshman
Claire Armstrong that found the net from 30 yards out. Although it accounted for the Cougars' lone goal, Averett had several other shots that required good saves by Meredith goalkeeper Chloe Cook.
Meredith (8-2-1, 3-0 USA South) took a 3-0 lead at the break on goals by Kristy Knight, Carrie Talbert and Alex Calvert. The Avenging Angels added two more insurance goals early in the second half by Maggie Hart and Knight.
Meredith outshot Averett 23-9, including 13-1 in the first half.
Averett returns to action on Sunday at home against Peace College at 4 p.m.
