FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett junior
Jeremy Dixon was named the USA South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday. It's the second time Dixon has received the honor this season.
Dixon, a wide receiver and return specialist, scored a touchdown on his only punt return attempt in a 34-28 triple-overtime win over USA South foe Ferrum College last weekend. Dixon took a third-quarter punt 73 yards for a score, tying the game at 7-7.
The return was his second career punt return touchdown. He also returned a punt 50 yards for a score last season against Greensboro College. Dixon is the first player in the program's history to return two punts for a touchdown in a career.
Earlier this season, Dixon became only the second player in Averett history to return a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in a career after he returned a kickoff 88 yards for a score against Christopher Newport University. His punt return last weekend made him the first Cougars to ever achieve both feats in a single season.
Averett hosts N.C. Wesleyan College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The winner of that game will earn the USA South Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs.
