BRIDGEWATER, Va. — For the second consecutive game, Averett couldn't overcome a rough first half. The Cougars lost to Eastern Mennonite University 101-81 on Saturday during the first day of the Don Glick Classic hosted by Bridgewater College.
Eastern Mennonite (2-0) grabbed the lead early, but the Cougars fought back to take a 15-12 lead on senior
Jeff Wehling's layup with 13:48 to play in the first half. The Royals answered with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to regain control. Eastern Mennonite continued to find success offensively en route to a 57-38 lead by halftime.
That 19-point lead grew to as much as 35 points in the second half until the Cougars cut it back down to 20 by the end of the game.
Although Eastern Mennonite shot slightly better that Averett from the field, other statistical categories were comparable with the exception of fouls. The Cougars were whistled for 32 personal fouls compared to the Royals' 16. That led to Eastern Mennonite's 45 free throw attempts compared to the Cougars' 13.
Sophomore
Kenny Hart led Averett with 13 points, while junior
Deran Burns scored 11 points off the bench.
Austin Twine led five Royals in double figures with 16 points.
Averett returns to action against tournament host Bridgewater on Sunday at 4 p.m.
