Volleyball advances to USA South semifinals with win over Peace

DANVILLE, Va. — Third-seeded Averett eliminated sixth-seeded Peace College 3-1 in the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament on Tuesday at the Grant Center. The Cougars won by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17.

Averett (23-14) will play No. 2 seed N.C. Wesleyan College in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. in Newport News. No. 1 seed Christopher Newport University, the tournament host, will play fourth-seeded Methodist in the other semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

After taking the first set, Averett got off to a 4-1 start in the second set. Peace (13-19) caught up and went in front 15-13. The Cougars bounced back with four straight service points to go ahead 20-17, but the Pacers rattled off four service points of their own to regain the lead before putting Averett away.

With the match tied 1-1, the Cougars came out on fire in the third set, taking a commanding 14-7 lead. Averett scored seven consecutive points to extend its lead to 21-9, sending the Cougars well on their way to a win.

Averett began just as strong in the fourth set. The Cougars quickly took a 16-6 advantage, which Peace never recovered from.

Junior Shannon Andy led all Cougars with 17 kills. Senior Jordan Maupin had 11 kills and nine digs, while freshman Hillary Metheny chipped in with 11 digs. Senior Marie Keatts led the team with 22 digs and sophomore Jesse Jones had a team-best 48 assists.

Amber Lowe led Peace with 15 kills and 12 digs.
