2009 VaSID All-State Team

Anthony Squillini and
Mario Huffman were both voted to the 2009 Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State Second Team on Thursday, the organization announced.
Squillini, a wide receiver from Clayton, N.C., had 55 catches for 816 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. He also had 21 kick returns for 397 yards, as well as 10 punt returns for 120 yards. He finished his career as one of the top receivers in the program’s history. He finished career second all-time in receptions (126), receptions yards (1,695), receiving touchdowns (19), kickoff returns (42) and kickoff returns yards (749). The two-time team captain was named the USA South Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28 and later was selected to the USA South All-Conference Second Team as both a wide receiver and a return specialist. It wasn’t his first time receiving recognition. As a junior, he was selected to the USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention Team at wide receiver and was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year by the Averett coaching
Huffman, a linebacker from Danville, finished the season with 86 total tackles, two sacks, three fumble recoveries and five pass breakups for the Cougars, who finished the season 7-3 as the USA South Conference runner-up. In two seasons with at Averett, Huffman totaled 166 tackles, including 9.5 for a loss and 3 for sacks. He also accumulated 6 pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 1 safety. He finished his career eighth on Averett’s all-time total tackles list. Each season, he was named a First Team USA South All-Conference linebacker. In 2008, Huffman was also the USA South Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year and named the USA South Conference Defensive Rookie of the Week three times. In addition, he was named the Defensive Player of the Year by the Averett coaching staff, selected to the 2008 VaSID All-State College Division First Team and named to the Roanoke Times Division III All-State First Team.
