HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — St. Mary's College (Md.) limited Averett to just 13 points in the second half as the Seahawks came from behind to top the Cougars 69-64 on Tuesday during the first day of action at the Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.
Averett (2-7) took a 51-46 lead into the locker room at halftime and increased that lead to eight points early in the second half. St. Mary's, however, chipped away and eventually took a 58-56 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
The two teams battled closely over the next six minutes, but sophomore
Victor Cortes' jumper with 4:03 remaining proved to be Averett's final points of the game. Cortes' basket gave the Cougars a 64-63 lead at the time, but St. Mary's didn't allow another Averett point the rest of the way. The Seahawks, who didn't have a field goal in the final seven and a half minutes, made their last six free throws to take the lead in the final minute of play.
St. Mary's Camontae Griffin led all scorers with 27 points.
Sophomore
Kenny Hart paced the Cougars with 14 points.
St. Mary's led 20-19 midway through the first half until Averett rattled off a 14-4 run to take charge. The Seahawks trimmed their deficit to as little as two several times, but Averett stayed ahead to end the first period.
The Cougars were 10-for-18 from 3-point range in the first half, but went 0-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Averett will face John Jay College in the consolation game at 2 p.m. John Jay lost to host Hampden-Sydney 83-56 on Tuesday.
