Box Score
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Averett pulled away in the second half in a dominant 76-57 victory over John Jay College in Wednesday's consolation game of the Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.
Averett (3-7) had four players score in double figures, including sophomore
Kenny Hart, who tallied 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half.
The Cougars watched their seven-point halftime lead shrink to one on several occasions midway through the second half, but they finished off John Jay down the stretch — something they struggled with a night earlier in a 69-64 loss to St. Mary's College (Md.).
Hart keyed an 8-2 run in less than a minute span late in the second half and Averett piled it on from there as its lead grew to 20 points. Meanwhile, the Cougars' defense held the Greyhounds to zero field goals for almost a five-minute stretch.
Averett, which never trailed the entire game, built a 30-23 lead by halftime.
The Cougars also got 12 points from senior
Chad Hardway and freshman
Michael St. John. Senior
Brandon Malone added 11 points and Hart finished with a team-high five assists.
John Jay's Vaughn Mason led all scorers with 24 points, while Daniel Desir and Darryl Dennis each scored 10 points.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Lynchburg College for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
