The Averett University football program honored its players and handed out the season awards during its annual banquet on Sunday evening at the Grant Center.
The Cougars' coaching staff honored its letter-winners, USA South All-Conference and Academic All-Conference players and recognized its seniors during the ceremony. The coaches also awarded a handful of team awards.
Freshman wide receiver
Chris Williams was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while freshmen defensive backs
Anthony Bowie and
Asaad Graham where named the Co-Defensive Rookies of the Year. Averett also had co-winners of the Most Improved Player Award, which was shared by sophomore defensive linemen
Anssi Nevalainen and
Corey Scruggs.
Junior
Jeremy Dixon was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Year, while senior running back
Dontavious Watson was the Offensive Player of the Year and senior linebacker
Zane Cooper was the Defensive Player of the Year.
Senior wide receiver
Anthony Squillini was named the Player of the Year by the coaches. Senior defensive lineman
Jacob Childress received the T-52 Award, given in memory of former Averett player Matt Townsend. Senior offensive lineman
Shannon Robinson was given the Cougar Vision Player of the Year.
The night closed with the unveiling of the top-10 plays of the year, followed by the 2009 Cougars highlight film.
