BURLINGTON, N.C. —  Third-seeded Christopher Newport University’s big second inning helped the Captains eliminate No. 7 seed Averett University 11-4 in the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 after one inning, Christopher Newport (21-8-1) pounded out five runs, including two on Mike Giarizzi’s single to center and one on Parker Neal’s solo homer.

The Captains’ offense continued to find success against Averett’s pitching, and CNU built a 10-1 lead after seven and a half innings.

Averett (14-24-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-4, but the Cougars stranded two runners in scoring position.

The Captains got one of those runs back in the top of the ninth, while Averett couldn't get anything going other than a Jake Loye double in its final at-bat.

Christopher Newport advanced to face N.C. Wesleyan College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The loss ended the Cougars’ season.
