BURLINGTON, N.C. — No. 6 seed Ferrum College rallied with the help of three home runs to beat seventh-seeded Averett University 9-6 on the second day of the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday morning afternoon at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Averett (14-23-1) led 6-2 through four and a half innings, but Ferrum (14-13) broke through for five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Averett right-hander Chase Hall gave up a three-run homer to Kevin Marshall and a two-run homer to Patrick Crooks that allowed the Panthers to take a 7-6 lead.

Ferrum added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run blast by Gabe Moncada.

The Panthers advance to face No. 4 seed Shenandoah at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The Panthers and Hornets are the last unbeaten teams in the tournament. Averett faces No. 3 seed Christopher Newport University later Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The Cougars opened the game on a tear, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Adam Higgins, who went 4-for-5, led off with a single and scored the first run on an error by the center fielder. Jake Loye later scored on a wild pitch.

Ferrum answered in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI hits.

Averett, which added two more runs in the second inning, extended its lead to 6-2 in the fourth on RBI singles from Eric Sibrizzi and Michael Moore.

Ferrum threatened in the bottom in the fourth after loading the bases with no outs, but the Cougars managed to escape without giving up a run. Hall struck out two straight and induced a flyout to center field to end the inning.
