BURLINGTON, N.C. — Averett left-hander
Sandra Dennison scattered six his and allowed only one run in seven innings as the eighth-seeded Cougars stayed alive with a 7-1 victory over fifth-seeded Methodist University in the USA South Conference Tournament on Saturday morning at Springwood Park.
Averett (19-16) advanced to play later Friday at 2 p.m. against No. 3 seed Greensboro College. The loss eliminates Methodist (17-26) from the tournament.
The Cougars jumped on Methodist for two runs in the first inning.
Erin Anderson, who finished 3-for-4, led off with a single and came around to score on
Hayley Brooks’ double to left field. Brooks eventually scored on a groundout.
Methodist answered with a run in the second inning on an Alex Bass RBI single, but Averett got it back in the third inning on a Brooks RBI single.
Averett maintained a 3-1 lead until the Cougars added a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.
Dennison (13-11) notched five strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk.
Brooks finished the day 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
