BURLINGTON, N.C. — Eighth-seeded Averett fell to ninth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan College 4-0 in the USA South Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Springwood Park, ending the Cougars’ season.
Averett (20-17), which won two elimination games earlier in the day, couldn’t piece together any opportunities on offense. That made it hard for the Cougars to rebound from a 3-0 deficit after five and a half innings.
The Cougars got back-to-back singles in the bottom of the sixth inning, but couldn’t capitalize. N.C. Wesleyan (13-26) added another insurance run in the seventh.
The Bishops advanced to play second-seeded Shenandoah on Sunday morning for the right to play top seed Christopher Newport for the championship.
Emily Atkinson finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Cougars.
The Cougars finished with their first 20-win season since their 20-22 mark in 2004, the same year they won the conference tournament.
