BURLINGTON, N.C. — Averett left-hander
Sandra Dennison struck out the final two batters to the eighth-seeded Cougars escape with a 3-2 victory over third-seeded Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon in the USA South Conference Tournament at Springwood Park.
Averett (20-16), which led 2-1 entering the final inning, added an insurance run on Dennison’s RBI single. That extra run turned out to be crucial in the bottom half of the seventh. Greensboro (20-18) scored one run and had the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on first base. Dennison buckled down and finished the Pride off with a pair of strikeouts to lift the Cougars to their second win of the day.
Averett will face ninth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan College (12-26) at 5 p.m. Saturday for a berth into Sunday’s championship game. The two teams met in the opening round of the tournament, with Averett notching a 4-1 win over the Bishops.
