The Averett men's soccer program recently teamed up the Piedmont Youth Soccer League of Martinsville to send soccer balls and equipment to a small village in Nicaragua.

Roger Villarreal, who lives in Martinsville and whose daughter Trina graduated from Averett in 2008, returned to his native town of Tasbapauni, Nicaragua, over the holidays for the first time in 36 years. With him he brought 50-60 soccer balls, practice cones and other donated equipment to give the children of Tasbapauni. The items were an immediate hit with the children.

The charitable effort was just one of the many community service projects that the Averett men's soccer program has been a part of this school year. In addition to holding youth clinics and helping with youth soccer tournaments, the men's soccer team has also been holding a clothing drive to benefit victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.
