ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A big second-half run helped N.C. Wesleyan College defeat Averett 82-69 on Saturday afternoon.

Averett (6-12, 3-4 USA South) opened the game with a flurry of 3-pointers that helped the Cougars grab a 16-4 lead less than five minutes into the period. That 12-point advantage, slowly vanished as the half wound down. N.C. Wesleyan (8-9, 4-1 USA South) grabbed a brief one-point lead before the two teams went into the locker rooms tied 42-42 at halftime.

A 13-0 Bishops run early in the second half gave N.C. Wesleyan a 61-48 lead with 13:15 to play. That deficit was too much to overcome as Averett chipped away at the Bishops’ lead but never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Although Averett shot 41.3 percent from the field, it couldn’t match N.C. Wesleyan’s 50 percent shooting from the floor.

The Bishops’ offense was led by Trey Drake’s 23 points. Devin Nichols added 16 points and Lamont Stokes scored 12 points.

Averett got 21 points from sophomore Kenny Hart, as well as 15 points apiece from seniors Brandon Malone and Chad Hardway.

The Cougars, who have dropped three games in a row, will look to rebound in a non-conference matchup with Bridgewater College next Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Grant Center.
