ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Averett jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Cougars demolished winless N.C. Wesleyan College on the road Saturday afternoon.
Averett (10-5, 7-3 USA South), which never trailed, enjoyed a 12-2 lead in the opening minutes of the contest. The Cougars' eight-point halftime lead only grew in the second half. Averett led N.C. Wesleyan (0-13, 0-8 USA South) by as many as 31 points after senior
Kristyn Wharton's layup at the 6:40 mark of the second period.
The Cougars' defense translated into offense as Averett outscored the Bishops 23-4 in points off turnovers in the second half.
Junior
Ashley Washington led the Cougars with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomores
Liz Martin and
Kaneshia Slade scored 16 points and 12 points, respectively. Martin added five assists and junior
Deandre Brown made a team-high six steals.
N.C. Wesleyan got 14 points from Samantha Urquhart, as well as 10 points and 12 rebounds from Imani Graham.
Averett extended its winning streak to a season-high three games and the red-hot Cougars have won seven of their last nine contests.
The Cougars return to action on Monday when they play a non-conference game at Hollins University in Roanoke at 6 p.m.
