GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett came from behind in the final minutes to knock off Greensboro College 63-56 on Monday. The win is the Cougars’ fifth in a row and it is their ninth victory in their last 11 games.
Trailing early in the second half, Averett (12-5, 8-3 USA South) used an 11-2 run to go in front 49-43 with nearly 13 minutes to play. However, that lead was short-lived as Greensboro (6-11, 4-8 USA South) charged back with eight straight points from Nikki Wilborn.
Greensboro increased its lead to 55-51 with 10:50 remaining before Averett rallied to victory. The Cougars’ defense limited the Pride to just one free throw over the final 10 minutes. Meanwhile, Averett regained the lead on freshman
Mette Scheiman’s 3-pointer with 2:58 remaining. The Cougars’ win was all but sealed with 1:14 to play when junior
Deandra Brown banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with one second left on the shot clock to increase the lead to 61-56.
Averett avenged a 58-41 loss to Greensboro in their first meeting on Jan. 9 in Danville to earn a split of the regular-season series.
Three Cougars scored in double figures, with Scheiman leading the way with 16 points. Junior
Ashley Washington added 13 points and 12 rebounds and senior
Kristyn Wharton added 12 points and two blocks.
Both teams battled in a competitive first half that saw Greensboro go into the locker room with a 35-34 halftime lead. Although Averett shot 54.5 percent in the opening period, Greensboro was able to counter that with seven 3-pointers.
Wilborn led the Pride with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds and Meredith Kelly chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday at Mary Baldwin College at 7 p.m.
