Fourth-seeded Averett takes on top seed N.C. Wesleyan College in Friday’s USA South Conference Tournament semifinals at Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center in Newport News. The winner will advance to Saturday’s championship game, where it will face the winner of the other semifinal game between Shenandoah University and Christopher Newport University. The title game will tip off at 4 p.m.

N.C. Wesleyan swept the regular-season series with Averett this season, winning 82-69 in Rocky Mount, N.C., on Jan. 23 and 90-80 on Feb. 16 in Danville. The Bishops hold the all-time series advantage 28-41 over the Cougars, as well as a 3-2 mark against Averett in conference tournament play. However, the last time they met in the USA South Tournament, Averett edged N.C. Wesleyan 108-105 in double-overtime in the 2007 championship game.

Averett advanced to the USA South semifinals by defeating fifth-seeded Ferrum College 73-62 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday in Danville.

Sixth-year Averett head coach Jimmy Allen is 13-2 all-time in USA South Conference Tournament games. Allen’s teams, which have won three consecutive tournament titles, have never fallen short of the tournament semifinals.

Averett guard Brandon Malone leads this USA South Conference with 2.6 steals a game.
