DANVILLE, Va. — Averett's offensive drought in the second half allowed Methodist University to come from behind to beat the Cougars 66-61 on Saturday afternoon. The loss ended Averett's program-best six-game winning streak.

Averett (13-6, 9-4 USA South) led 49-47 midway through the second half, but the Cougars' scoring went silent for nearly five minutes. Methodist (13-9, 9-6 USA South) took advantage by rattling off an 11-0 run to go in front. Averett never recovered down the stretch.

Despite winning the scoring battle in the paint, Averett struggled for most of the game to hit shots from close range. The Cougars also finished just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. Yet, early on in the first half, the Cougars overcame their troubles after initially falling behind 13-7. Averett was sparked by a 18-1 run midway through the first period. However, that 25-14 lead melted quickly as Methodist scored the next 11 points to tie the game.

Averett's 21-6 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half helped the Cougars take a 31-27 lead into halftime.

Junior Ashley Washington led all scorers with 20 points, along with 11 rebounds. Sophomore Liz Martin added 15 points.

Michaela Myers led the Monarchs with 18 points. Dawn Sanderson added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Adriana Wilson scored 13 points.

Averett will look to bounce back when the Cougars travel to 15th-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
