ASHLAND, Va. — Sophomore James Carter's RBI single through the left side scored sophomore Kyle Newcomb in the 10th inning to push Averett past Randolph-Macon University 4-3 in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Averett (13-5) watched an early 3-0 lead slip away midway through the contest as Randolph-Macon (5-6) forced extra frames. Yet, the  Cougars responded right away in the 10th inning.

Freshman Jordan Kidd was hit by a pitch with one out, but he was forced out at second on Newcomb's grounder. Senior Eric McGuire followed with a single to left field, moving Newcomb to second. That set up Carter, who came through with his only hit of the afternoon to score Newcomb from second and put Averett back on top.

Senior right-hander Brian Knowles pitched the bottom of the 10th, striking out two as he mowed down the side to earn his second save of the season. Senior Chase Hall (2-0) earned the win in relief.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A walk and a one-out error led to an RBI single by senior Michael Moore. Kidd plated senior Jake Loye with an RBI groundout to put the Cougars ahead by two and Moore later scored on Newcomb's double to left-center.

That three-run lead held until the sixth inning, when the Yellow Jackets put a run on the board on Bryan Hannum's RBI double. Randolph-Macon eventually tied the game an inning later with a pair of runs on two hits and an Averett error.

Averett pounded out 11 hits, including three apiece by senior Eric Sibrizzi and freshman Jimbo Newcomb.

Averett senior Zack Ward allowed just one run on two hits with five strikeouts and seven walks in 6 innings, but didn't factor into the decision.

Averett is scheduled to host Penn State-Fayette on Thursday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader a Owen-Fulton Field. Rain is in the forecast for the Danville area on Thursday, so stay tuned to www.averettcougars.com for any changes in the schedule.
