MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Averett notched a 5-1 exhibition victory over Delaware Tech before falling to Division II Mansfield University 8-0 in five innings on Wednesday morning during the second day of the Snowbird Classic.

Averett only needed two good offensive innings to earn its second win in a row in its win over Delaware Tech (4-3). The Cougars got a pair of runs in the first inning. The first game when freshman Brooke Hensley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Their lead increased to 2-0 on freshman Lauren Daniel's sacrifice fly, which scored sophomore Heather Carnes.

Delaware Tech scored its lone run on an RBI single in the fifth inning, but Averett answered with three runs in its half of the inning. Hensley's single plated one run and an error on the play allowed a second run to score as well to put the Cougars ahead 4-1. Freshman Heather Francisco added an RBI groundout later in the inning.

Freshman Nicole DeFilippo earned the win, striking out four Roadrunners in seven innings of work.

In their second game of the day, one bad inning doomed the Cougars. Mansfield led 2-0 through four innings, but the Cougars gave up six runs on five hits and three errors in the fifth inning to end the game.

Mansfield (8-0) limited Averett to just two hits — a single and a double by freshman Jenna Rudder.

DeFilippo took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs and striking out four in just 4.2 innings.

Averett finishes play at the Snowbird Classic on Thursday with a 9 a.m. game against Gordon College and a 10:30 a.m. contest with Bluefield College.
