Box Score (vs. Gordon)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Averett allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a walk-off 4-3 loss to Gordon College on Thursday morning at the Snowbird Classic. As if that wasn't bad enough, the Cougars had rain wash away what might have been a victory over Bluefield College later in the day.

Coming off the loss to Gordon (3-4), Averett jumped out to a 5-2 lead on Bluefield College. However, rain halted play in the middle of the fourth inning. After a delay, the rest of the game was canceled and all stats were wiped away because the game had not gone at least five innings — the standard length to make a game official.

It was already a tough day for the Cougars, who watched a three-run lead disappear in the bottom of the seventh inning against Gordon. A pair of leadoff singles got things going for Gordon College, which tied the game on Kristen Terry's two-out, two-run single to right field. Terry, who advanced to second on the throw home, scored the winning run on Kim Levinsky's walk-off single to center field.

Averett (2-9) broke a scoreless tie when freshman Jenna Rudder scored on sophomore Emily Atkinson's sacrifice fly. The Cougars increased their lead to 3-0 an inning later thanks to an RBI single by junior pinch-hitter Jessica Maldonado and senior Hayley Brooks' sacrifice fly.

Freshman pitcher Nicole DeFilippo had limited Gordon to just one hit entering the sixth inning, but the Fighting Scots took advantage of an Averett error. Emily Bordon doubled to left field, scoring Levinsky to cut Averett's lead to 3-1.
