Box Score
FERRUM, Va. — Averett scored six runs in its final two at-bats, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early hole as Ferrum College held on for a 10-8 victory on Monday night. The win earned the Panthers (11-2, 3-1 USA South) a two-game sweep of Averett (15-7, 3-3 USA South).
Ferrum grabbed a 3-0 lead after three innings, but Averett bounced back to pull within one run. In the fourth inning, Averett junior
Adam Higgins got the Cougars on the scoreboard by scoring on a Ferrum error. Later that inning, senior
Michael Moore's single brought home senior
Eric Sibrizzi.
The Panthers, however, answered right back with six runs on three hits and one error to take a commanding 9-2 lead. They added another insurance run in the seventh.
That turned out to be helpful as Averett charged back in the final two innings. Senior
Jake Loye smashed a two-run triple in the eighth and the Cougars added two more runs that frame. Down 10-6 entering the ninth inning, Averett got a little closer on Sibrizzi's RBI double. Averett added another run on a sacrifice fly, but it wouldn't be enough as Ferrum held on for the win.
Averett outhit Ferrum 10-8 as Higgins, Sibrizzi, Moore and sophomore
James Carter each had two hits.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday in a non-conference home game against Maryville College at 3 p.m. at Owen-Fulton Field.
