DANVILLE, Va. — Maryville College's 10-run output in the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie and helped the Scots defeat Averett 14-2 on Tuesday at Owen-Fulton Field.

Maryville (13-4) got three consecutive one-out singles, including two that never left the infield, to get things going in the top of the fifth inning. The third of those singles led to the game's first run. Averett (15-8) got Blaine Reese to fly out for the second out, and it seemed as if the Cougars were going to get out of the inning without any further harm. However, Maryville rattled off five more hits and took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch to take a commanding 10-0 lead.

Averett responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs off RBI hits from junior Adam Higgins and senior Eric Sibrizzi.

Maryville added four more runs the rest of the way as the Scots won their ninth game in a row.

Sibrizzi and senior Michael Moore each finished with a pair of hits for Averett.

Senior right-hander Zack Ward (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars despite a promising start. Ward had a career-high six strikeouts in the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.

Averett will look to end its three-game skid on Wednesday when it hosts Arcadia University at 3 p.m. at Owen-Fulton Field.
