NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett scored one run in the ninth inning, but the Cougars fell short in a 5-4 loss at Christopher Newport University on Saturday.

Christopher Newport (13-5, 5-2 USA South) broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the eighth inning thanks to three of Averett's five errors.

Averett (16-10, 3-4 USA South) got a leadoff double by sophomore James Carter in the top of the ninth inning, and freshman Jimbo Newcomb brought him home with a single to center field. The Cougars, however, left Newcomb stranded on base to end the game.

The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fourth on Conner Madden's solo homer.

Averett fought back to tie the game in the sixth inning with a pair of leadoff singles. Senior Michael Moore scored thanks to a Christopher Newport error, and freshman Jordan Kidd came home on senior Eric McGuire's RBI groundout. Sophomore Kyle Newcomb later scored on a wild pitch.

Senior right-hander Chase Hall struck out seven in six inning of work, but he didn't factor in the decision. Senior Brian Knowles dropped to 3-3 after taking the loss.

Averett and Christopher Newport finish their two-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
