NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett scored one run in the ninth inning, but the Cougars fell short in a 5-4 loss at Christopher Newport University on Saturday.
Christopher Newport (13-5, 5-2 USA South) broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the eighth inning thanks to three of Averett's five errors.
Averett (16-10, 3-4 USA South) got a leadoff double by sophomore
James Carter in the top of the ninth inning, and freshman
Jimbo Newcomb brought him home with a single to center field. The Cougars, however, left Newcomb stranded on base to end the game.
The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fourth on Conner Madden's solo homer.
Averett fought back to tie the game in the sixth inning with a pair of leadoff singles. Senior
