DANVILLE, Va. — Averett's USA South-opening doubleheader ended with Shenandoah University taking a pair of games from the Cougars. The Hornets won 9-3 and 8-6 on a warm, sunny afternoon at Cougar Field on Saturday.
After dropping the first game of the day, the Cougars (2-11, 0-2 USA South) began Game 2 strong with two runs in their first at-bat. A pair of singles put two runners aboard for freshman
Brooke Hensley, who brought them both home with a double to left-center to put Averett ahead 2-0.
Shenandoah (9-5, 2-2 USA South) bounced right back with a four-run frame in the second inning to take the lead. The two teams traded runs in the third, giving the Hornets a 5-3 advantage entering the fifth inning. Shenandoah added three more runs that inning, including two on a single by Shatora Lane.
The Cougars scored one run in each of their final three at-bats, but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
In the opener, Shenandoah's offensive consistency allowed the Hornets to score at least one run in all but two innings. Averett's four errors also hurt the Cougars' chances.
Hensley finished the day a combined 3-for-6 with four RBIs, including one on a solo home run in Game 1. Freshman
Jenna Rudder had a pair of hits and scored three runs, while sophomore
Heather Carnes was a combined 4-for-8 at the plate.
