DANVILLE, Va. — Greensboro College took both games of a USA South Conference doubleheader against Averett on Wednesday afternoon. Greensboro edged Averett 8-4 in eight innings before winning 8-0 in five innings in Game 2.

In the opener, Averett jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Brooke Hensley drove in the first two runs with a one-out single to center field. The Cougars added one more run on sophomore Heather Carnes' RBI single to center.

Averett's lead stayed at three until the fifth inning, when Greensboro got on the board. A Cougar error kept an inning alive and Rebecca Pink drove in Ingrid Joyce to cut Averett's lead to 3-1.

The Cougars were three outs away from victory in Game 1, but the Pride forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. In the eighth, things continued to go Greensboro's way. The Pride took advantage of five runs and one error to score five runs — all plated with two outs.

Averett managed to get one run in the bottom of the eighth but came up short.

Greensboro dominated Game 2 from the start, scoring at least one run in the first four innings. Meanwhile, Pride pitcher Hannah Pennell — who earned the Game 1 win in relief — limited Averett to just three hits.

Averett will look to rebound when it travels to Ferrum College for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on April 5.
