DANVILLE, Va. — Hamdpen-Sydney College held Averett's offense in check as the Tigers ended the Cougars' nine-game winning streak with a 10-4 victory on a chilly Thursday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (11-3) gave up a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Cougars bounced right back. In the bottom half of the inning, junior
Adam Higgins led off with a walk and moved to second base with his 17th stolen base of the season. He moved to third on senior
Eric Sibrizzi's single and later scored on an error on a failed pickoff attempt at first base. Sibrizzi also advanced to second on the play and scored on senior
Jake Loye's single to center field. Loye gave Averett a 3-1 lead when he scored on another Hampden-Sydney error.
The Cougars' lead held until the top of the third inning, when Hampden-Sydney (4-2) plated three runs to take 4-3 lead. The Tigers tacked on a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, and then added two more runs in the sixth and ninth innings to take control.
Averett got one run back in the bottom of the ninth on Sibrizzi's RBI single that scored freshman
Jimbo Newcomb, but it wasn't enough.
The Cougars, who had pounded double-digit hit totals in each of their last nine games, were limited to just six hits by Hampden-Sydney.
Sibrizzi and Loye led the Cougars with two hits, one RBI and one run scored apiece.
Averett returns to conference play this weekend when it hosts USA South foe Methodist for a two-game series starting on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Owen-Fulton Field.
