LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett outhit Lynchburg College, but the Hornets came away with a 10-5 victory over the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.

Averett (12-5) jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning thanks to RBI doubles from senior Jake Loye and sophomore Kyle Newcomb and a run-scoring single by freshman Jimbo Newcomb. However, Lynchburg held the Cougars to just two runs the rest of the way — one on a solo homer by Kyle Newcomb and one on a bases loaded walk.

The Hornets (7-3), who answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, took the lead for good in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. The added three more runs in the eighth to give themselves some extra cushion.

Averett outhit Lynchburg 14-13. Loye and Kyle Newcomb each finished with three hits and senior Eric Sibrizzi had a pair of hits.

Sophomore Tyler Meunch took the loss on the mound, while Lynchburg's Ryan McDonough improved to 3-0 this season.

Averett returns to action at Randolph-Macon College at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
