MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Averett picked up its first win of the season with a 4-1 victory over Mount Aloysius College on the first day of the Snowbird Tournament on Tuesday. The Cougars (1-7) overcame a 12-2 loss in six innings to King's College earlier in the day.

Averett defeated Mount Aloysius (2-1) behind the arm and bat of freshman right-hander Nicole DeFilippo, who pitched a two-hitter and smacked a solo home run that helped seal the victory.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead on freshman Chrissy Pickert's RBI single in the second inning and jumped ahead 2-0 when freshman Jenna Rudder scored in the third.

DeFilippo made it 3-0 with her shot over the center field fence and Averett went in front 4-0 thanks to an error in the sixth inning. Mount Aloysius' only run came on a solo homer in the top of the seventh.

Against King's College, Averett gave up a pair of runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a fielding error. The Cougars got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning on Rudder's RBI double.

The Monarchs (3-2) increased their lead to 4-1 in their next at-bat thanks to a pair of Averett errors. King's three-run lead held up until Averett added another run in the fifth inning. Rudder walked and then stole second base before scoring on a single by sophomore Emily Atkinson.

However, King's put the game away with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and shut down the Cougars in their half of the inning to end the game early.

Averett returns to action on Wednesday morning at the Snowbird Tournament. The Cougars play Delaware Tech at 9 a.m. and then face Mansfield University at 10:30 a.m.
