DANVILLE, Va. — Averett outhit N.C. Wesleyan College, but the Cougars didn't capitalize on their opportunities in a 5-1 conference loss to the Battling Bishops on Saturday at Owen-Fulton Field.
N.C. Wesleyan (16-16, 8-3 USA South) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Denver Nixon's sacrifice fly. The Bishops added two more runs in the third inning. Zach Alexander's line drive to right field was misplayed, and the ball rolled to the fence as two runs scored and Alexander pulled into third with a triple.
Averett (22-14, 5-6 USA South) plated its only run in the sixth inning. Senior
Michael Moore knocked a one-out double down the right-field line, and freshman
Jordan Kidd singled him home to cut N.C. Wesleyan's lead to 3-1. Kidd finished with two hits against the Bishops.
N.C. Wesleyan added two more insurance runs in the ninth to pull away.
Averett, which outhit N.C. Wesleyan 8-7, left eight runners on — including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
Both starting pitchers went all nine innings in a game that took less than two hours to play. Andrew Webb improved to 5-1 after earning the win, while Averett senior
Chase Hall (3-1) took his first loss of the season.
The two teams will finish their two-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. Averett's seniors will be honored prior to the game.
