RALEIGH, N.C. — Averett ended its regular season with a pair of losses at Meredith College on Saturday. Meredith beat the Cougars 8-0 in five innings before taking Game 2 by a score of 7-3.
Averett was held to just one hit in the opener — a single by sophomore
Heather Carnes in the fifth inning. Meredith took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, scoring the only runs it would need. However, the Avenging Angles plated four more runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning to pull away.
Meredith struck first in Game 2, as well. The Avenging Angles went ahead 2-0 on RBI singles from Brittany Tucker and Arielle Stout.
Averett charged back in the top of the fifth inning. After a pair of hit batters and a single loaded the bases for the Cougars, an error on a fielder's choice allowed freshman
Jenna Rudder to score from third. Carnes then gave Averett a 3-2 lead wit a two-run single to center field.
The Cougars' lead held until the bottom of the sixth inning. Meredith used three hits and took advantage of two Averett errors to score five runs and take a three-run lead, which it didn't relinquish.
Carnes and senior
Hayley Brooks each had a pair of hits in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Averett earned the No. 9 seed in next week's USA South Conference Tournament. The Cougars will take on eighth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan College on Friday at 9 a.m. at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C., to open the double-elimination tournament.
