Kidd, Moyer earn Rookie of the Year honors as USA South unveils baseball all-conference team

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett freshmen outfielder Jordan Kidd and left-handed pitcher Chris Moyer took home the top rookie awards as the USA South announced its 2010 all-conference baseball team on Wednesday.

Kidd was named the Rookie of the Year, while Moyer was named the Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Averett also had eight players voted to the USA South All-Conference Team. Junior outfielder Adam Higgins was selected to the First Team, while senior catcher Michael Moore, junior designated hitter Eric McGuire, freshman utility player Jimbo Newcomb and Kidd earned All-Conference Second Team honors. Sophomore first baseman James Carter, senior third baseman Eric Sibrizzi and senior right-handed pitcher Jake Loye were chosen to the Honorable Mention Team. Sibrizzi was also Averett's representative on the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team.

Kidd, a Chesapeake, Va., native, batted .340 with 28 runs scored and 35 RBIs in 37 starts. He had 13 stolen bases, eight doubles, two triples and a home run, and defensively he had a 1.000 fielding percentage. Kidd, who was named the USA South Rookie of the Week twice this spring, ranked second in the conference with 156 at-bats.

Moyer, a Grafton, Va., native, was 6-0 in 10 appearances with a 2.25 earned run average. He finished with 26 strikeouts in 44 innings, and he also notched a complete-game shutout. Opponents batted just .202 against Moyer, who was named the USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week three times this spring.

Higgins batted a team-high .420 in 37 starts in center field. The Quinton, Va., native had nine doubles, four triples and three home runs while driving in 26 runs and scoring a conference-high 60 runs. Higgins also led the USA South with 35 stolen bases and was named the USA South Player of the Week once this season.

Moore, a Seaford, Va., native, had a .353 batting average with 36 RBIs, 29 runs scored, 14 doubles and two home runs. McGuire, a Danville, Va., native, hit .344 with 19 RBIs and 22 runs scored. Newcomb, a Quinton native who split time between shortstop and second base, batted .328 with 22 runs scored and 16 RBIs.

Carter came on strong at the end of the season to hit .339. The Chesapeake native had 16 RBIs, six doubles and 17 runs scored. Sibrizzi, a Clayton, N.C., native, batted .384 with a team-high 41 RBIs and scored 37 runs. He also finished with 10 steals and led the conference in sacrifice bunts and plate appearances. Loye, a Reidsville, N.C., native, finished with a 5-3 record and a 5.01 ERA in his first season on the mound. He had 39 strikeouts in 55.2 innings and threw three complete games.
