BURLINGTON, N.C. — The third-seeded Averett University men’s tennis team breezed through No. 6 seed Ferrum College for a 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday at the Burlington Tennis Center. The Cougars (8-6) swept the top four singles matches and took two out of three doubles contests.
Averett will take on No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
In the No. 1 singles, junior
Xavier Ruiz set the tone for day by crushing the Panthers’ Christopher Miller 6-1, 6-1. Freshmen
David Lembke and
Kirill Orlov and junior
Bruno Faidutti all followed Ruiz’s example and won in straight sets.
In the doubles matches, the duo of Ruiz and Lembke defeated Miller and Daniel Grubb 8-1. Averett also took the No. 2 doubles match thanks to a decisive 8-1 victory by Orlov and Faidutti over John Hartin and Matt Mellone.
Ferrum (5-9) was able to take the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches because of wins by Darren Agee and Jay Dotson over Parry Bason and John Thrower, respectively. The Panthers were also able to take the No. 3 doubles match with a 9-7 win by the team of Agee and Bob Dill over Bason and Thrower.
