BURLINGTON, N.C. — Averett freshman Nicole DeFilippo pitched six solid innings and only allowed five hits and one earned run, but the ninth-seed Cougars’ offense only recorded two hits and stranded five base runners in a 3-0 loss to No. 8 seed N.C. Wesleyan in the first round of the 2010 USA Conference Tournamen on Friday morning at Springwood Park.
DeFilippo managed to hold the Bishops (12-24) scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Jessica Poindexter singled to left field and eventually scored on an Alexis Gallop single to center field. N.C. Wesleyan scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase its lead to three.
Averett (6-20) tried to battle back in the seventh inning when sophomore Heather Carnes belted a lead-off single to center. She advanced all the way to third thanks to an infield grounder by freshman Heather Francisco and a wild pitch, but senior Hayley Brooks lined out to the center to end the Averett threat.
Pitcher Ashley Driver only surrendered two hits in seven games to earn the win for the Bishops.
The Cougars will play sixth-seeded Shenandoah University in an elimination game at 3 p.m. on Friday.
