BURLINGTON, N.C. — Freshmen David Lembke and Kirill Orlov picked up wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches, but it wasn’t enough for Averett to topple No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University in the USA South Conference Tournament semifinals at the Burlington Tennis Center. The Captains (14-8) swept all three doubles matches and took four of the six singles contests to earn a 7-2 victory over the third-seeded Cougars (8-7).

In the No. 2 match-up, Lembke beat CNU’s Martin Brown in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4. In the No. 3 match, Orlov crushed Lorenzo Sison 6-2, 6-2.

Averett’s No. 1 doubles team of Lembke and junior Xavier Ruiz played a tight match against Sison and Eric Shulman, but eventually lost 8-7 (7-5).  The Captains No. 2 team, made up of Glenn Heyer and Dusty Nelson beat Orlov and junior Bruno Faidutti 8-1 and CNU’s Chris Yost and Dylan Young took down freshman John Thrower and sophomore Perry Bason in the No. 3 meeting 8-2.

Heyer beat out Ruiz in the No. 1 singles match 7-5 and 6-2 and Nelson beat out Faidutti 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 match. CNU’s Robby Wagner swept Bason 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot and Thrower fell to Young 6-2, 6-3.
The Captains will play No. 1 seed N.C. Wesleyan College in the finals on Sunday at 10 a.m.
