NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport handed Averett a pair of USA South Conference losses on Friday. The Captains (32-6, 14-2 USA South) edged Averett 2-0 in the opener before winning 9-1 in five innings in Game 2.

Averett (6-21, 4-12 USA South) allowed just four hits to Christopher Newport in Game 1, but the Captains made them count. CNU scored one run in the first inning with the help of two hits and an error, and later added an insurance run in the sixth inning thanks to another Averett error.

The Cougars, meanwhile, also only had four hits — all scattered.

Averett's offense finally broke through for a run in the first inning of Game 2. Freshman Jenna Rudder led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Lauren Daniel. However, CNU pitcher Elizabeth Holte held the Cougars to just one more hit the rest of the way.

The Captains answered Averett's one run in the top half of the first with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. They added four more runs in the second and one more run in the fourth to pull away.

Rudder and freshman Heather Francisco each had a combined two hits for Averett.

Averett completes its regular-season schedule at Meredith College on Saturday.
