MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Averett University was voted second in the USA South Conference football preseason poll, the conference announced on Tuesday at the league’s media day hosted by Maryville College. Defending conference champion N.C. Wesleyan College was voted as the favorite with five of the seven first-place votes.
Averett (7-3) is coming off a runner-up finish in the USA South after going 5-2 in conference play in 2009. The Cougars received two first-place votes in the preseason poll. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
Christopher Newport University, which received one first-place vote, was picked third, followed by Ferrum College. Fifth place in the poll was a tie between Greensboro College and Maryville College, while Shenandoah University and Methodist University rounded out the poll.
The 2010 season kicks off on Sept. 4 as all eight teams open with non-conference opponents.
