FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett was picked third in the USA South Conference men's soccer preseason poll, which was unveiled on Wednesday. Defending conference champion Christopher Newport University was selected as the favorite.
Christopher Newport, which reached the NCAA national quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, received six of seven first-place votes (coaches can't vote for their own team). N.C. Wesleyan College, which was picked second, received the other first-place vote. Following Averett in the poll was Methodist University at No. 4 and Greensboro College and Shenandoah University tied for fifth. Ferrum College was picked seventh.
Averett, which advanced to the USA South Tournament semifinals last season after going 10-8-1 (3-3 conference), opens its season on Sept. 1 at Hampden-Sydney College.
