FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett was voted second in the USA South Conference preseason volleyball poll, which was announced on Wednesday. Defending champion Christopher Newport University was named the favorite.
Christopher Newport has won at least a share of six consecutive regular season crowns. CNU has also won seven of the past nine USA South Tournament championships, including the last three titles. The Captains received nine of the 10 first-place votes (coaches can't vote for their own school). Averett received the other first-place vote.
Following CNU and Averett in the poll were N.C. Wesleyan College, Methodist University, Meredith College and Greensboro College. Ferrum College and Peace College tied for seventh in the poll, ahead of Shenandoah University and Mary Baldwin College.
Averett, which finished 23-15 overall and 13-5 in the USA South last season, opens its 2010 campaign at Sweet Briar College on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
